The Normal Heart and Petals on the Wind enjoyed solid debuts over the holiday weekend.

Based on the 1985 play that chronicles the emergence of AIDS in New York City in the early 1980s, Ryan Murphy's adaptation starring Mark Ruffalo and Julia Roberts drew 1.4 million viewers on Sunday. Although The Normal Heart couldn't top the 2.4 million viewers Behind the Candelabra grabbed on the same night last year, it ranks fifth in viewership among the 17 original films that have debuted on HBO since 2010.
