The Tonight Show scored 6.6 million viewers to handily defeat The Late Show, which earned 3.8 million viewers for Leno's longtime rival, David Letterman. Leno's ratings were up 45 percent over Conan O'Brien's average Tonight Show numbers, but were a whopping 58 percent lower than O'Brien's ratings on his first night on the job, back in June.
In prime time, ABC was the big winner with the two-hour season finale of The Bachelor (15 million viewers) and the "After the Rose" special (14.3 million). The finale was up 33 percent among adults in the 18-to-49 demographic from last week, but down 4 percent from the last Bachelor finale.
CBS comedies also fared well, as How I Met Your Mother drew 10.5 million viewers and the season premiere of Rules of Engagement lured 9.8 million. Big Bang Theory (15.6 million viewers) won the night in the demo, while Two and a Half Men (16.8 million viewers) was the night's most-watched show.
A Rob Zombie-directed episode of CSI: Miami (12.1 million viewers) placed second at 10/9c behind "After the Rose."
Fox placed third for the night with a House (6.7 million) repeat and 24 (8.6 million), which was down 11 percent in the demo from last week.
NBC's Olympics glow quickly wore off, as the network returned to fourth place. Chuck (6.7 million viewers) was up a bit, and a two-hour Law & Order averaged 7.8 million viewers. (The second hour was up 33 percent over The Jay Leno Show's Monday average, however.)
The CW's Life Unexpected (1.9 million viewers) slipped just a bit following a repeat.
