Downton Abbey Downton Abbey

What's this?!? There is some accounting for taste?!? Downton Abbey's Season 2 premiere averaged 4.2 million viewers.

Nielsen data on Tuesday showed that the Emmy-winning series' return Sunday night doubled the average PBS prime-time rating, and marked an 18 percent jump over the show's first-season average — which made PBS ecstatic.

PBS President/CEO Paula Kerger said: "I'm so pleased that audiences have flocked to their local PBS station and Downton Abbey to enjoy some of the best drama on television this season."

The second installment of The Bachelor, on the other hand, which debuted last week to 7.74 million viewers (down about 13 percent compared with a year ago, declined to 7.24 million, or about 7 percent, preliminary Nielsen data shows.

Week 2 also saw a decrease to a 2.2 rating from 2.4 among industry-prized 18-to-49-year-olds.

Cable numbers released late Tuesday showed that the college football national championship game between the Alabama Crimson Tide and LSU Tigers was the most-watched program on television Monday night — 24.2 million viewers, which made it the second-biggest audience in basic-cable history behind the 2011 title tilt. Still, fans weren't totally psyched to see the rematch. It pulled a 14.0 rating, down 8 percent from last year and the third-lowest rating of the 14 BCS championship contests.

As it turned out, it was a down year (about 10 percent) for the bowl games on ESPN, as the Rose, Orange and Sugar Bowls, as well as the BCS title game, all declined this season.
