Randy Travis Is "Awake and Alert" Following Surgery

Country music star Randy Travis remains in critical but stable condition after suffering a stroke last week, according to his doctor.

Travis, 54, was admitted to the hospital on July 7 for idiopathic cardiomyopathy and was put on life support for 48 hours. During that time, Travis suffered a stroke and had to undergo emergency neurosurgery. "He has responded well to the surgical procedure he had to relieve the pressure in his brain," Dr. Gary Erwin said in a video interview Monday. "He is awake and alert, interacting with his friends and family and beginning to start doing some early physical therapy."

Travis is expected to stay at the hospital for two to three weeks before being transferred to an inpatient facility. It does not seem drugs or alcohol played any part in Travis' heart condition. However, the singer does have a family history of cardiomyopathy, which likely is related to his condition.Travis' fiancée Mary Davis shared a few words, thanking friends and family for their support. "Thank you. First and foremost, I just want to thank the friends, the family, the outpouring of love and affection that has shown up at the hospital and at home and through several different avenues of support," Davis said. "I know that those are prayers that have helped mend his heart along with the skilled hands of the physicians and doctors and nurses here at The Heart Hospital of Baylor in Plano."
