Quanticoreturns on Thursday (April 26) and it's going to feel like a different show.
The spy drama skips forward three years to find Alex (Priyanka Chopra) living a "tranquil" life in Italy, but the peace and quiet of her new situation lasts about 10 minutes into the season premiere before she's dragged right back into the crime-fighting game she just left. Together with a new team that includes Ryan (Jake McLaughlin), Owen (Blair Underwood), Shelby (Johanna Braddy), Harry (Russell Tovey) and Jocelyn Turner (played by Quantico newcomer Marlee Matlin), Alex will take on global missions as part of an FBI black ops team.
TV Guide caught up with Priyanka Chopra to get the scoop on what Alex has been up to since she left the United States and what will bring her back into the crime fold so quickly.
It's been three years since we last saw Alex. How is she different when we see her in the Season 3 premiere?
Priyanka Chopra: I think Alex is a little more mature. She can handle her emotions a little bit better, though I still think she's a bit emotionally stunted. She's a very detached kind of girl. At the same time, I think Alex has matured a lot more. She found herself when she fled the country. She spent a lot of time on herself and she was in a really tranquil place in life when she was pulled back in.
Speaking of tranquil places, she's in Italy. Can you tell us what her life is like when we see her in this first episode?
Chopra: To give you a backstory about what Alex would have been like, she would have spent about two years in Italy. She went back to India. You'll see that as the season unfolds how Alex gets to Italy. She ends up going to Italy and getting a job there, meets a guy and settles down. She was looking to be settled after all the upheaval with Ryan. You'll see over the course of the season what happened between the two of them and where they are when they end up meeting three years later.
Executive producer Michael Seitzman told me that this season will ditch the flashbacks, which has been a signature thing for Quantico. How does that affect the pace of Season 3?
Chopra: We sort of ditched the flashbacks even halfway through [Season 2] when the two timelines merged, but this season is very interesting to me. First of all, we're very global this year. The storyline goes to Italy. It goes to Ireland and New York City. At the same time, every episode has a case which buttons at the end of every episode. It usually deals with some other country in the world. It's a very global sort of take on the show. The five people who have come back from the cast, which is Blair, me, Russell, Jake and Johanna — what happens with our characters as the new other characters come into the show as well is very interesting to me.
What are you most excited for fans to see in Season 3 of Quantico?
Chopra: I'm really excited about the fact that it's a completely different tone. It's a completely different reset to the show. I'm really excited about people seeing Alex's man drama, which will be a lot of fun, but also how she deals with it emotionally. It's a very vulnerable Alex that you will see this year.
Quantico airs Thursdays at 10/9c on ABC.
