The revolving doors at Private Practiceare turning once again with the reunion of Addison (Kate Walsh) and Pete (Tim Daly) in Thursday night's episode (10/9c on ABC). While the pair have only flirted in previous seasons, Daly tells TVGuide.com that they're meant to be — it'll just take awhile. The 53-year-old actor also discusses the relationship with Violet (Amy Brenneman) and his character being a single father.
TVGuide.com: We hear Addison and Pete reconnect in the next episode. Is it something they will regret, or is it just something fun?
Hopefully, both. Pete and Addison have an amazing chemical reaction to each other, which we saw a lot in the first season. I don't think that has died. If that spark combusts into flame, it will be a pretty big flame. We'll have to see what happens. Sometimes big flames burn out, sometimes they smolder for a long time.
TVGuide.com: Fans always expected in the first season that Addison and Pete were meant to be. Did you always see it that way as well?
Absolutely, without a doubt. Anyone who has watched any television for a while knows that TV romances play out over time. If you milk them too soon, you have no place to go. Pete and Addison have a lot of obstacles, but I certainly think that the possibility for something significant is there.
TVGuide.com: How will Sam [Taye Diggs] feel about them reconnecting?
There's a lot of dangerous territory being tread in the show. Addison has this best-friend relationship with Naomi [Audra McDonald]. I mean, how is she going to feel about that? There's a lot of complicated, emotional scenarios flying around and it remains to be seen how they'll all play out.
TVGuide.com: Will Violet ever be stable enough to come back and play mommy to Lucas who is now in Pete's care?
Pete has cut Violet an awful lot of slack. She's just a mess. One of the great things about this show is that relationships are broken, and then they heal, change and evolve. I hope that Violet and Pete get a chance to approach some kind of resolution because there's a lot of unfinished business there. [Also], Violet slept with Addison's father and that was surprising. That makes it so there's a long way back for she and Addison.
TVGuide.com: How is Pete handling being a single father?
I wish someone on the show would acknowledge how freaking awesome Pete is. He's been an amazing father; he's been a champ through this whole thing. He's tried really hard to let Violet have her time and he's been doing a good job. Violet is denying, or pushing off the idea, of being a mother, which seems odd. Granted, she's been through a hell of a lot, but she's also had a lot of time to heal. We owe the audience some kind of explanation of where that road goes.
TVGuide.com: We've seen several skeletons come out of Pete's closet. What will we see in the coming episodes?
The beginning of this season was such a wonderful surprise for me. The writing was beautiful and it was great to be able to jump into that needy story line, with this window into Pete's past, but it's really going to be up to [executive producer] Shonda Rhimes and the other writers to see how much more of Pete's past can support.
TVGuide.com: There have been a lot of shakeups at Oceanside Wellness Center. Will the original team ever reunite?
Of course. Our show is wonderfully entertaining and it's fantasy. One of the wonderful things about the fantasy of it is that the configurations of the lovers and the workers can always change. You've got all these problems and you think they resolve and then new problems happen!
TVGuide.com: Is there a chance that Pete may find love from someone other than Violet or Addison?
Who's he got left? He's got Naomi or maybe Sam or Cooper. [Laughs] There absolutely is a chance [for someone new]. It's like a freaking Petri dish, this show. Everybody is always in each other's business. Yeah, a new woman could come along. I don't think, at Pete's core, his love and desire to be with a woman has diminished, whether it's casual or something more significant. I think there will always be some woman in his life.
Who do you want to see Pete end up with?
