The Pretty Little Liars are in Rosewood for less than three days after the five-year time jump before there's a dead body in the town square.
The girls come back to Rosewood to testify that they would feel safe if Charlotte DiLaurentis (Vanessa Ray) were released from the mental hospital. It works, but their former tormenter is dead on the sidewalk in front of the church less than 24 hours after being freed. Guess who the prime suspects are? Thus the new mystery begins...
Before Charlotte became this season's first casualty, we get to see what's happened to Hanna (Ashley Benson), Spencer (Troian Bellisario), Emily (Shay Mitchell) and Aria (Lucy Hale) over those five years:
Hanna: Hanna is the assistant to a fashion designer. She's newly engaged and planning a destination wedding, possibly to Italy. Her mom Ashley (Laura Leighton) has renovated Radley Sanitarium to create Rosewood's premier restaurant and hotel. She clearly still has feelings for Caleb (Tyler Blackburn), but he's otherwise engaged as well...
Spencer: Spencer is working as a lobbyist in Washington, D.C., and pitching in on her mom's (Lesley Fera) state Senate campaign. The episode doesn't explicitly say that Spencer and Caleb are a thing, but the tension is palpable. He is considering going to work for her and is staying in the Hastings' barn while he's in Rosewood. They shared an intimate conversation in the lobby of the Radley and a car to Charlotte's funeral. It seems that Spencer has finally made good on her promise to bottle Caleb up as "the best boyfriend ever." It's going to be super-fun when Hanna finds out.
Emily: Emily's life has changed the most since she left Rosewood for Pepperdine University at the end of last season. Her father died, making it impossible for her to focus on her studies. She still hasn't returned to school - and she hasn't told any of the girls. Her big secret this season is that she seems to have a large supply of syringes in her purse. Has Emily developed a drug habit? Is she diabetic? Also: Where's Paige (Lindsey Shaw)? Emily definitely has the most questions to answer going forward.
Aria: It seems Aria will inhabit the darkest timeline. Things are going well with her new beau Liam, but the "W-T-F"s start flying when she realizes that Ezra (Ian Harding) is back in town. Ezra spent the last few years building houses with Habitat for Humanity... until Mexican pirates kidnapped his girlfriend, who is now presumed dead. Ezra's tragedy is proof that the stakes are much higher now and PLL is prepared to go much darker than it has in previous seasons.
Pretty Little Liars airs Tuesday at 8/7c on Freeform.
