Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides brought in some major booty — an estimated $90.1 million — to become the top opening of 2011. However, the debut was notably lower than that of the second ($135.6 million) and third ($114.7 million) films. The film, starring Johnny Depp and Penelope Cruz, fared much better on foreign waters with a total of $256.3 million, making it the highest-grossing launch ever overseas.
Bridesmaids held steady in second place, grossing $21 million in its second week of release. After two weekends on top, Thor, fell to No. 3, drawing $15.5 million in ticket sales; its total gross now surpasses $145 million.
