Now that the younger Salvatore has officially been marked by Rayna's (Leslie-Anne Huff) sword, he's on the run until he can figure out a way to bring the Huntress down. He settles on New Orleans as the place to hang out, and you can't visit the Bayou without running into a Mikaelson and that's where the fun begins.
Wesley gave TVGuide.com the scoop on what Stefan is thinking while he's in exile and what he and Klaus are going to get up to when they meet again.
How is Stefan feeling after being forced into hiding?
Paul Wesley: It's certainly not something he hasn't had to do before. It's not the first time that Damon [Ian Somerhalder] has gotten him into a sticky situation. I don't think he's thrilled about it. For me, it's a lot of fun. As far as the character, it's kind of the dynamic between Stefan and Damon. Stefan is always the martyr. That's his role.
How determined is he to get back to Mystic Falls or is he more focused on getting away from the Rayna?
Wesley: He wants to figure this out. He wants to get home. He's in love with Caroline [Candice King]. He doesn't want to be eternally banished or be a fugitive for the rest of his life. He wants to figure it out.
How worried should fans be about the foreshadowing that Rayna will eventually catch up with Stefan?
Wesley: You should be afraid. She definitely causes some pretty traumatic [scenes]. It's not resolved quickly. It's a whole big thing.
What is his reaction to seeing Klaus again for the first time in a while?
Wesley: "Holy s--t, we have so much history and so many experiences together, but we are so different now." He's also hiding a secret from Klaus when he first sees him, so it's not completely innocuous. [Stefan] is a little on edge because he's afraid that Klaus may figure out [that] secret. He kind of has to fool him into thinking he's there for a reason that he's not. That creates a little bit of awkwardness and unease in Stefan's mind, [but] I think he's relieved to see someone that was once his friend.
How is Klaus going to react to the fact that Caroline was pregnant and just had twins?
Wesley: They discuss it, for sure. Klaus keeps his cool. He plays his mind games on Stefan and kind of messes with him, taunts him a little bit in a typical fashion. He doesn't have some huge outburst or freak out.
We know that Stefan goes to New Orleans to escape, but what role will he have in helping the Mikaelsons with their sire problem?
Wesley: He's going to place himself in a predicament where he has to be in the center of it. The reality is that he's part of that sire line so he's directly affected by it. So he's like "Oh s--t, I've got to get involved here."
What are you most excited for fans to see in this crossover event?
Wesley: I think these characters have a beautiful long history--a rich, rich history together. It's going to be a real treat for the audiences to get a taste of Klaus and Stefan. Season 3 they had this really beautiful friendship/foe thing. There will be some resolve to the whole "Klaroline" thing. I think fans will get their fix and possibly want more.
Would you say that Stefan and Klaus come out of this as more friends than foes at the end of the crossover?
Wesley: They go away respecting each other. They have a handshake and a gentleman's agreement.
The Vampire Diaries and The Originals crossover event kicks off Friday at 9/8c on The CW.
