J. Paul Getty III, the grandson of oil tycoon J. Paul Getty, has died, according to The Associated Press. He was 54.
Getty died Saturday at his Buckinghamshire, England, estate after a lengthy illness. No official cause of death was given.
In 1981, a drug-induced stroke left Getty partially paralyzed and in a wheelchair.
His son, Brothers & Sisters star Balthazar Getty, said in a statement that his father "never let his handicap keep him from living life to the fullest, and he was an inspiration to all of us, showing us how to stand up to all adversity."
When he was just 16, the elder Getty was abducted in Rome. He was detained for five months by captors who severed one of his ears after his family initially refused to pay the ransom.
Getty is survived by an uncle, three siblings, two children and six grandchildren.
