Austin Whitney severed his spinal cord after an accident resulting from his drunken driving before his freshman year in college. "I was so consumed with hatred for myself," he says of his emotional state after the accident.
Instead of giving up on life, though, he persevered and found an experimental treatment for his paralysis called an "exoskeleton" that allowed him to stand and finally walk again at his recent graduation from the University of California, Berkley.
"It really makes me reluctant to use that word 'impossible' ever, ever again," Whitney says.
