The first full-length trailer for Outlander's fourth season is here, and it's magnificent. We get a really good look at how the show has set up Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire's (Caitriona Balfe) life in North Carolina; the tension Claire will have with Jacosta (Maria Doyle Kennedy); Stephen Bonnet (Ed Speelers); and even a good dose of Brianna (Sophie Skelton) and Roger (Richard Rankin) bonding in the future. The big surprise comes at the very end of the trailer though: there's an unexpected voiceover from none other than Tobias Menzies.
"You know, sometimes life takes unexpected turns," says what sounds like the voice of Frank Randall — Black Jack had a much gruffer tone (yes, we really can tell the difference) — as someone who looks a lot like Brianna approaches the stones in colonial clothing.
As Outlander fans know, Frank died in a car accident early in Season 3. However, Menzies told TV Guide last year that he'd love to return for flashbacks to flesh out Frank's relationship with his adopted daughter. If that is Brianna approaching the stones to warn her mother of whatever it is that Roger has discovered in the future, it would make sense she'd think a lot about the father she grew up with and what he'd think about her traveling through time to meet her biological father. Wouldn't she want Frank to feel OK with her decision to go back in time?
Now that we know that Claire is settled in her marriage to Jamie, we honestly would love to see Frank return in some capacity. As we all know, he deserved better.
Outlander Season 4 premieres Sunday, Nov. 4 at 8/7c on Starz.
