The red carpet for the 90th Academy Awards was full of dazzling dresses and gorgeous gowns, but the one that caught everyone's eye was worn by Tiffany Haddish. Haddish wore an authentic Eritrean Zuria dress to honor her family's Eritrean roots.
"My father is from Eritrea and he passed away last year," Haddish told Michael Strahan on the carpet before the show. "And he said one day I would end up here, and if I ever end up at the Oscars to honor my people. So I'm honoring my fellow Eritreans."
She followed that quote up with a traditional Eritrean ululation (a high-trilled vocal sound) that had Strahan in stitches. Way to represent, girl!
Considering the Oscars have gotten reamed for their lack of diversity in recent years, it's not surprising that actors and actresses of color have started turning up to bring their communities back into the spotlight. When you consider how many shout outs movies like Get Out and Black Panther got on the carpet this year, it feels like people of color are more present than ever before.
Haddish's dress wasn't the only highlight of her red carpet walk though. After making it her mission to meet Meryl Streep on the carpet, Haddish saw her opportunity and took it. She spotted Streep walking the carpet and made her move, even gathering up the skirts of that gorgeous Eritrean gown in order to hop over the velvet rope to intercept Streep and execute the most adorable curtesy.
