Oscar Pistorius was sentenced to a maximum five years in prison on Tuesday for killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp last year.
The double-amputee Olympian testified that killing Steenkamp was accidental since he mistook her for a home intruder. However, the South African judge Thokozile Masipa cited "gross negligence" in Pistorius' decision to shoot Steenkamp four times through a toilet cubicle door on Valentine's Day last year. He was convicted of culpable homicide, but acquitted of murder.
Pistorius, 27, was also sentenced to three years for firing a gun in a restaurant weeks before Steenkamp's death, which will he will serve concurrently.
Pistorius could be eligible for house arrest after serving eight to 10 months in prison.
