[Warning: This post contains spoilers from Orange Is the New Black Season 7. Read at your own risk.]

Orange Is the New Black began its final episode on a somber note — with the realization that one of its core characters had died.

The series finale confirmed that Pennsatucky (Taryn Manning), whose real name was Tiffany Doggett, died after being found unconscious by Taystee (Danielle Brooks) at the end of the penultimate episode. As medical examiners carted her body away at the start of the show's final episode, she reappeared as an apparition in front of the prison gates to flip on her signature hoodie and wave goodbye before disappearing, once and for all.

Pennsatucky had fatally overdosed on drugs, perhaps intentionally, after assuming she failed her GED exam. Since her instructor Luschek (Matt Peters) had forgotten to submit a request for extra time due to Pennsatucky's dyslexia, she was forced to take the exam within the standard allotted time. Pennsatucky later confronted Luschek over the incident but the damage had been done. Feeling defeated, she hit up Daya and her drug dealer gang in the laundry room and was last seen alive trying to score some of their supply. Her death hits especially hard when it's revealed later in the episode that, despite her fears, Pennsatucky had actually passed the test and earned her GED.

In one of the episode's most moving scenes, Dixon (Mike Houston) and Suzanne (Uzo Aduba) paid tribute to their fallen friend with a toast of "yellow drink," aka Mountain Dew, wearing their hoodies up over their heads. Suzanne then led the inmates of B-Block in an emotional sing-a-long to Pennsatucky's favorite song, the Mountain Dew jingle. It was a bitter ending for the colorful character who, over the years, had evolved from racist antagonist to fan favorite.

All seven seasons of Orange Is the New Black are now streaming on Netflix.
