Some 30.1 million people tuned in for NBC's Winter Olympics coverage to watch Shaun White, Shani Davis and Lindsey Vonn win gold medals Wednesday, while 18.4 million viewers watched the selection of the final 17 of Idol's top 24. It ended a skein of 222 Idol episodes that had triumphed in the ratings.

Vonn has virtually has been the face of the Olympics —her downhill skiing victory was a highlight of the night as Americans won six medals — while White has spent the last four years revolutionizing snowboarding, coming back to win his second straight gold medal.
