New Max and HBO TV Shows and Movies in May 2025

If you don't have summer travel plans, no worries: Just fire up your Max app and let it take you wherever it is you want to go. The upcoming third season of And Just Like That... will give you the chance to spend these hot months in New York City, while the second season of Conan O'Brien Must Go will take you all around the globe with an excellent travel companion for company. If you just want to escape this decade altogether, Duster, which reunites Lost's J.J. Abrams and Josh Holloway, can transport you back to the '70s.

On the movies side, HBO will continue its partnership with A24 in May, with the Academy Award-winning epic The Brutalist soon becoming available to stream on Max. Also premiering in May are Bong Joon Ho's Mickey 17, starring Robert Pattinson as a guy who dies a lot, and Mountainhead, which is written and directed by Succession creator Jesse Armstrong and follows a group of wealthy friends (played by Steve Carell, Jason Schwartzman, Cory Michael Smith, and Ramy Youssef) who get snowed in together during a financial crisis.

The best new HBO and Max movies and shows in May

Max streams all HBO shows and movies when they debut on HBO. But not all shows and movies on Max make it to HBO. We'll designate Max exclusives where appropriate.

Duster (May 15, Max)

Lost fans, we've been (relatively) patient, and it's finally our time: Josh Holloway is starring in another J.J. Abrams-produced show. Set in 1972, Duster stars Holloway as a getaway driver who teams up with the first Black female FBI agent (played by Rachel Hilson) to bring down a growing crime syndicate, led by a sinister mob boss (played by Keith David). The Brutalist (May 16, HBO)

Adrien Brody's performance as László Toth, a visionary architect and Holocaust survivor who emigrates to America where his talent is recognized and exploited by a wealthy benefactor, earned him his second Best Actor Oscar win at this year's Academy Awards. The Brady Corbet-directed epic, which has a three-and-a-half-hour runtime, got a lot of attention for its intermission during its run in movie theaters, but if you're watching it at home you can just pause it whenever you want. And Just Like That... Season 3 (May 29, Max)

I couldn't help but wonder what Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte are up to. Luckily, I won't have to wait long to find out! The Sex and the City sequel series returns for another go-around, just in time for summer in New York. Season 3 finds Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) settling into her new apartment (which seems to have a rat infestation, meaning she's finally having a relatable NYC experience) and adjusting to her "complicated" dynamic with Aidan (John Corbett) after the two amicably parted ways at the end of Season 2. Plus, Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) has a new love interest, and Charlotte (Kristin Davis) is... probably continuing to do whatever 2020s Charlotte does. Can't wait!
