Hoffman, 51, will appear on the show's fifth episode in the possibly recurring role of Frances, David's sometimes smothering mom. Frances adores her only child and is thrilled to learn she is going to be grandma. However, she and Bryan don't always see eye to eye, though the two will attempt to work things out now that a baby is on the way.

David's mom is one of several extended family members viewers will meet on The New Normal later in the season. The half-hour comedy also recently added Jayson Blair, who plays Goldie's husband, as a series regular.

Hoffman recurred on One Life to Live in 2009 as Eunice and has also guest-starred on Curb Your Enthusiasm, 30 Rock, Raising Hope and, most recently, Melissa & Joey.

The New Normal first previewed during the Olympics and will officially premiere on Tuesday, Sept. 11 at 9:30/8:30c on NBC.
