Netflix to Raise Subscription Price for Longtime Subscribers

How much is it going up?

Netflix is raising its subscription price for subscribers who have been with the service for over two years. Everyone who has been enjoying a grandfathered price of $7.99 per month for the streaming service will see the charge bumped up to $9.99 in May -- the price Netflix implemented for new subscribers in May 2014.

According to Yahoo, the price change will affect 34 percent -- approximately 17 million people -- of Netflix users. The bump in rate will help pay for the increasing original content Netflix has been producing that makes it such a hot commodity. Grandfathered users will be able to enjoy the new season of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, which premieres April 15, at the old rate, but the increase kicks in just before the fourth season of Orange Is the New Black premieres June 17.

What to stream in April

Even though no one likes a price bump (because we all know there will never be a price decline), a Netflix subscription is still cheaper than a commercial-free Hulu account ($11.99 per month) and only slightly more expensive than an Amazon Prime account ($8.25 per month).
