MTV Apologizes for Profanity During Movie Awards

MTV issued an apology Monday after the 2010 MTV Movie Awards telecast drew criticism for its excessive use of profanity, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

During Sunday's live ceremony, most but not all expletives were caught by censors. A review by the Culture Media Institute counted more than 100 foul words during the show.

"The MTV Movie Awards is a live televised event known for irreverent comedy and a party atmosphere where our guests speak more freely than they otherwise might," the network said in a statement obtained by THR. "While we aired the live broadcast with a delay, we were unable to mute every word that some might find objectionable. All of these words will be muted in subsequent airings. We sincerely apologize to those in our audience who were offended by any objectionable words that might have slipped by for the live airing."

The awards show, hosted by Aziz Ansari, attracted 16.4 million viewers.
