Mr. Robot: 8 Questions the Finale Needs to Answer

Seriously, what the %$@# is Stage 2?

The penultimate episode of Mr. Robot 's second season left us wanting more. Lots more. Not because it was the kind of riveting television that demands its viewers storm the network to get the next episode right away, but because the episode didn't really give us any answers to the season's biggest questions, including the head-exploding cliffhanger in the previous episode. What a tease!

With just one episode left in Season 2, Mr. Robot has a long way to go to give satisfying answers to all the questions it's been posing since the premiere. (Though we shouldn't be surprised. It took the show more than half a season to answer the big "who's at the door?" cliffhanger from the Season 1 finale.)

Look, I know mystery and abstract storytelling is the key to Mr. Robot's game, but come on, Sam Esmail! Stop toying with us and give us some answers to these questions that are poisoning our brains.

1. What is Stage 2?

We've known about Stage 2 for a while now, but we still don't know what it is. Is that too much to ask? Heck, even Elliot (Rami Malek) doesn't know what it is, but he also DOES know what it is. Know what I mean? So what is it? Is it flipping on the microchips in the brains of test subjects from the Washington Township Plant? Is it hacking the U.S. government and exposing the corporate corruption that's endemic to our political system? Is Stage 2 actually the second stage of cancer that's been implanted into Elliot (one of the crazier theories out there)? Season 2 has spent a lot of energy teasing Stage 2, and if we have to go into the off-season without an answer, I will scream really loudly into a bucket.

2. What has Tyrell been doing this whole time?

Tyrell (Martin Wallstrom) finally made his grand re-appearance in the penultimate episode, calling a meeting with Elliot to discuss... uhhh, something. He seemed fresh and at ease since we last saw him, meaning he must have been... errr, something. Obviously whatever he was up to was big, and he's been communicating with the Mr. Robot (Christian Slater) side of Elliot, but because Elliot doesn't know what he was doing, we don't either. At this point all we can guess is that Tyrell was in the trunk of a car in a '90s sitcom or hosting underground bum fights.

3. Where was Tyrell's phone call coming from?

Joanna's driver made a big deal of the location the mystery phone calls were coming from (the ones we assume were from Tyrell) after Elliot traced it. And that was the last we heard of that. Was the driver shocked because that building is notorious for having poor cell phone reception or is there something more going on here? Your guess is as good as mine. Well, probably not since I'm an expert and all, but you know what I'm saying.

4. What happened to Cisco and Darlene?

Carly Chaikin, Mr. Robot

After the Dark Army shot up Lupe's Mexican Grill and Cantina where Cisco (Michael Drayer) and Darlene (Carly Chaikin) were eating in the front window, we expected the next episode to pick up the bloody aftermath (or at least give us another look at those delicious enchiladas). Nope! The following episode barely mentioned the two, leaving their fate precariously in the air. Fans have studied the footage and slowed it down frame by frame, which showed Cisco's head exploding like a watermelon in space, but without confirmation we can't say anything for sure. Okay, Cisco is definitely dead, right? The real question here is if Darlene is okay. Dom (Grace Gummer) mentioned that "several" people were killed in the incident. I'm thinking it was Cisco and some poor bystanders in the middle of scarfing down some late-night muncharitos.

5. What happened to Trenton and Mobley?

Oh yeah, these two disappeared too! Mobley (Azhar Khan) appeared ready to go on the run, but after asking Trenton (Sunita Mani) to meet him, he stood her up. Did the Dark Army get to them already? Did the feds? Did ginormous rats drag them into the bowels of the subway system like a rodent tugging on a piece of pizza? Like many things in this show, something HUGE happened to them and then Mr. Robot didn't tell us what it was.

6. Where's Leon?

leon.jpg

While we're at it, what happened to Leon (Joey Bada$$)? Did he ever finish Seinfeld? What did he think of the finale? Personally, I thought it was terrible and really blew it with that whole jail sequence that never connected to whatever theme the show was going for, but I really want to know his opinion. Unfortunately, he vanished after slicing up Elliot's attackers like he was a human Vitamix. Are we even definitely sure he's 100-percent real? I'm confused.

7. What is Angela up to, really?

Portia Doubleday, Mr. Robot

We've seen Angela (Portia Doubleday) accept promotions from her job at Evil Corp, flaunt her money over plumbers and have casual sex with randos at bars. We've also seen her investigate Evil Corp, go to the feds to incriminate Evil Corp and solemnly do some karaoke. Which person are you Angela? What are you really up to? And what did you really learn from Whiterose that made you so giddy and call your lawyer off? You are an enigma wrapped in a mystery blanketed in the series finale of The Event with a hint of Under the Dome. You make zero sense.

8. What really happened in those three days that Elliot blacked out?

mrrobot-news.jpg

Peter Kramer/USA Network

This is the key right here. At some point between the second-to-last and last episodes in Season 1, Elliot got a LOT of work done. Unfortunately, he doesn't remember it. And you know what that means? We have no idea what what he did either.

The Season 2 finale of Mr. Robot airs Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 10/9c.
