The Mindy Project: What's Next for Mindy and Danny?

The Mindy Project's Season 2 premiere ended with a major twist: Casey (Anders Holm) called off the wedding to Mindy (Mindy Kaling) and went back to Haiti without her. And while the couple has agreed to do long distance, it's not going to be easy (especially with their floundering Skype sex skills). So what's next for the adorably odd couple?

The Mindy Project's Season 2 premiere ended with a major twist: Casey (Anders Holm) called off the wedding to Mindy (Mindy Kaling) and went back to Haiti without her. And while the couple has agreed to do long distance, it's not going to be easy (especially with their floundering Skype sex skills). So what's next for the adorably odd couple?

"We love [Anders Holm] so much, but at the end of the day, we gotta have her single," writer and star Ike Barinholtz tells TVGuide.com. "Without saying officially it's not going to work out, it's going to be very, very, very complicated."

The Mindy Project is finally legitimately awesome. Why you should watch

However, not all hope is lost for Mindy-Casey shippers. Barinholtz teases that even if Casey goes away for now "we haven't seen the last of him ... he'll be back many times." Unfortunately, fans can expect the relationship to begin deteriorating as early as Episode 3. "We're going to see Casey has a lot of things on his mind and isn't really sure of his path and kind of wants to embrace that exciting almost nomadic lifestyle," Barinholtz explains, noting that this way of life isn't necessarily compatible with Mindy's.

This is great news for Mindy-Danny fans, whose fantasies were given some serious credibility by Danny's (Chris Messina) obvious affection for his newly engaged co-worker in the premiere. "There's no denying there's something between Danny and Mindy. There's something big bubbling up between the two of them," Barinholtz says. And while Danny's feelings came to the forefront last week, Barinholtz promised this season will also feature a moment in which Mindy "clearly is super-hot for Danny" too, but "it's something that won't be touched on for a little while."
"We love it underlying and kind of part of the root of their relationship, but the slow burn is something I think is a really of fun thing to watch play out," he says.

And before Mindy and Danny can consider exploring their feelings for each other, Danny will be exploring life as a bachelor once more — something he struggles with at first. In Tuesday's all-new episode, Danny seeks solace in a basketball team for male divorcees, which includes Mindy's ex Tom (Bill Hader) and Kris Humphries. "It was kind of a joke," Barinholtz says of approaching Kim Kardashian's ex. "As it turns out, Kris Humphries is a big comedy nerd and watches the show and loved The Office and stuff, so he was more than happy to join us. We all liked him a lot."

In addition to Danny's depressing foray into community sports, "The Other Dr. L" also features Mindy's rivalry with her replacement Dr. Paul Leotard (James Franco) come to a disastrous head that involves copious amounts of alcohol and raging hormones. "Right away, we knew the two of them were not going to hook up, obviously. She's engaged. So to have this really antagonistic relationship, but under it all she thinks he's really hot. So much so that when he passes out from alcohol she kisses him, which is assault," Barinholtz says. Unfortunately, Mindy isn't the only one who takes advantage of the drunken doctor — something that will complicate the office dynamic and cause irreparable damage with one of his co-workers.

The Mindy Project airs Tuesdays at 9:30/8:30c on Fox.
