Casting the Laverne & Shirley and This is Spinal Tap comic genius as Victor Baron, a Donald Trump-like beauty-pageant mogul would seem like a masterly move. But ABC's featherweight mystery gave the versatile thespian (who proved he could handle drama as Daily Planet editor Perry White on Smallville) almost nothing to do. In two relatively brief scenes, McKean captured the vulgarian's egotism — he's constantly being followed by reality-TV camera — but had little time to scratch below the tacky gold-leaf surface.
It didn't help that McKean was saddled with the terminally mediocre Teri Polo (Little Fockers) as his former beauty-queen wife. And his coif was way too tasteful to rival Trump's. In honor of the Donald, Castle's hairdresser — and writers — should be fired.
What did you think of Michael McKean on Castle?
