Michael J. Fox (Marty McFly, Alex Keaton, Teen Wolf) is joining ABC's thriller for a five-episode arc, ABC announced on Wednesday. Designated Survivor returns from its winter hiatus on Wednesday, Feb. 28 at 10/9c, but TV Guide has confirmed that Fox's arc will begin later in this season.
Fox will play Ethan West, a bulldog of a lawyer who is hired by the White House to investigate allegations against former president Cornelius Moss that he leaked classified info. West is said to be a wily prosecutor who is only beholden to the law, like any good independent counsel should be. ABC says that makes him a potent adversary for Kirkman, signaling that Kirkman may find himself involved in Moss's mess.
Fox's recent forays into television include NBC's The Michael J. Fox Show, a hilarious recurring role on Curb Your Enthusiasm and a recurring role as a cunning lawyer on The Good Wife. He's best known for roles in the Back to the Future trilogy, Spin City and Family Ties.
After the episode, showrunner Keith Eisner told TV Guide, "The more we spoke about [the decision to kill Alex], with Natascha and the network and studio, the more we recognized we had a tremendous opportunity here to create a new world for a show about a president, which is a president by himself, a president dealing with the aftermath with the loss of his wife. And how he deals with that we think provides a great opportunity for great storytelling."
Designated Survivor returns Wednesday, Feb. 28 at 10/9c on ABC.
