Harry Potter star Michael Gambon has been tapped to star in HBO's three-hour miniseries adaptation of J.K. Rowling's book The Casual Vacancy, Deadline.com reports.

The Casual Vacancy tells the story of a small, seemingly idyllic English village that is brimming with war  — war between the rich and poor, war between teenagers and their parents, war between husbands and wives and war between teachers and students.

Gambon will play Howard Mollison, the owner of the Pagford deli. Also starring in the project are Notes on a Scandal's Julia McKenzie as Howard's wife, Shirley, Rufus Jones as their son, Miles, and Keeley Hawes as Miles; wife, Samantha. Rory Kinnear, Monica Dolan, Simon McBurney, Keeley Forsyth, Abigail Lawrie, Richard Glover, Marie Critchley and Michelle Austin have also been cast.

Rowling is working on the project with the BBC, which announced plans to adapt The Casual Vacancy for the small screen in December 2012 three months after the novel was released. Rowling's producing partner and literary agent Neil Blair will executive-produce the miniseries alongside the author, Paul Trijbits and Rick Senat. EastEnders alum Sarah Phelps will pen the miniseries, Ruth Kenley-Letts will produce and Jonny Campbell will direct.
