If people didn't think mermaids were real before, Animal Planet's follow-up special may have convinced a few skeptics. Maybe. At least the ratings indicate plenty of people are curious about the fictional aquatic beings.

After last year's Mermaids: The Body Foundnetted the network its strongest ratings since Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin's death in 2006, Sunday's follow-up Mermaids: The New Evidencedrew 3.6 million viewers, the channel's largest audience ever, according to Animal Planet.

Mermaids don't exist, US government says

The original "speculative documentary" had viewers so convinced that mermaids existed, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration had to release an official statement debunking their existence. "No evidence of aquatic humanoids has ever been found."

Do you still think mermaids are real?
