In the Empire finale, fans saw a darker side of Jamal (Jussie Smollett) when he dangled Beretti off a balcony. But that was only the beginning.

This season, Empire will explore more of Jamal's dark side and "see what that means and how he grapples with it," according to showrunner Ilene Chaiken. "It changes everything," she tells "It changes his relationships with his friends and family and it will be reflected in his music. He'll make some big choices."

And now that Jamal's been named Lucious' successor, Cookie (Taraji P. Henson) will find herself on the receiving end of his new attitude. "We think of them as America's most beloved couple and they're estranged through part of Season 2," Chaiken says. "They come into the season on the outs having experienced their first fight, if you will. And clinging to one another, but not quite trusting. They're going to go through a lot of changes in the second season."
