Alexander McQueen tried to overdose before he hanged himself, The Associated Press reports.

Fashion designer Alexander McQueen found dead

Toxicology tests indicated a "substantial" mix of cocaine, sleeping pills and tranquilizers in the designer's system when he hanged himself Feb. 11.

The 40-year-old McQueen was found dead on the eve of his mother's funeral. In the days leading up to his death, McQueen had tweeted several times about grief over his mother, Joyce, who died Feb. 2.

Coroner: Alexander McQueen hanged himself

"It seems that he had a history of self-harm and, no doubt fueled by cocaine, he resorted to desperate measures to end his life," coroner Paul Knapman said in the inquest.
