Robert Lewis Burns Jr., the original drummer in Lynyrd Skynyrd, died in a car crash Friday. He was 64.

Burns' vehicle went off the road when approaching a curve in Georgia shortly before midnight, state police told the local Fox affiliate. According to police, Burns hit a mailbox and tree, and he wasn't wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash.

Burns was a founding member of the rock band in the '60s. He left the group in 1974, only a few years before lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines and singer Cassie Gaines were killed in a 1977 plane crash.

Guitarist Gary Rossington, the remaining original member in Lynyrd Skynyrd, remembered Burns on Facebook Saturday.
