Feeling Lost? Here's Our Guide to Kate Austen

Our favorite castaways thus far have been on the island a few months, but for Lost fans, it's been more than 260 days since Jack's super-freaky flash-forward. As the Jan. 31 season premiere (finally) draws closer, TVGuide.com is offering daily profiles — "refreshers," if you will — of the key players in ABC's island-based odyssey. Kate, by the "Numbers": Raised in rural Iowa, Kate (Evangeline Lilly) learned that Wayne, the alcoholic and abusive man dating her mother, Diane, was actually her biological father. Kate, by the "Numbers": Raised in rural Iowa, Kate (Evangeline Lilly) learned that Wayne, the alcoholic and abusive man dating her mother, Diane, was actually her biological father. Hoping to ease her mother's pain, Kate rigged the house to blow up, with Wayne in it, so Diane could get the insurance money. Now a fugitive, it became a cat-and-mouse game across the country with determined U.S. Marshal Mars on her tail. Taking several aliases, Kate ultimately fled to Australia and worked on a farm. When the owner noticed Kate's picture at the post office, he notified the authorities. Captured, Kate and Mars were en route to the U.S. when Oceanic Flight 815 crashed.

Things Got Interesting When...: Immediately following the plane crash, Kate watched as Jack tended to the wounds of a man whose identity she was withholding. With creepy noises in the distance, handcuffs found by Walt and a gun belonging to a U.S. Marshal in Sawyer's possession, the sense of danger was everywhere. As we learned that Kate was the prisoner, her innocent looks became anything but that, and she has kept us guessing ever since.

'Tis Better to Have Loved and Gotten Lost?: While running from the law, Kate landed in Florida, took on the name Monica, and fell in love and married Kevin, a policeman. When a planned trip required getting a passport, Kate feared discovery of her true identity and she left him. Later going by the name Maggie, Kate hooked up with a man named Jason, her coconspirator in a New Mexico bank robbery.

On the island, Kate met Jack on the day of the crash and stitched up his wounds. Jack later disregarded the warnings from a dying Mars that Kate was dangerous and could only see her for who she is now. This connection grew until we were flashed forward. Kate, or rather Freckles, was able to ignore the flirtations of Sawyer until the Others held them both captive. One hot afternoon, fed up with his hard labor, Sawyer kissed Kate and later, as Sawyer was getting beaten, Kate screamed that she loved him so they'd stop. To comfort him, she climbed out of her cage and spent the night with him, unaware that Jack had witnessed the interlude via security cam.

Six Degrees of Serialization: Cassidy, a woman Sawyer conned, helped Kate visit her mother and evade the authorities. While visiting her stepfather at the army recruitment office, Sayid appeared on the television.

Her Season 3 Story: Breakfast on the shoreline with Ben turned out to be no guarantee that you're his best bud. Landing in a cage opposite Sawyer without her own personal stash of fish biscuits, Kate was forced to work in a rock quarry until Jack interrupted his surgery on Ben to facilitate her escape with Sawyer.

Having reached the main island, Kate defied Jack's request not to return for him and headed back with Locke, Sayid and Rousseau. Reaching the barracks, she was surprised to find Jack playing touch football with the Others. Captured again, she was astonished to learn not only that Locke had abandoned the barracks with the Others, but also that Jack had befriended Juliet. Returning (again) to the beach camp, Kate gave in to Sawyer's flirtations and spent the night with him in reaction to Jack's support of Juliet. After learning of a planned kidnapping by the Others, a surprise attack required Kate to leave — again — but this time with most of the survivors to head for the radio tower.

How Kate Has Us Puzzled: Juliet's taped message to Ben regarding Sun's pregnancy suggested that Kate too could be pregnant. Having spent at least two nights with Sawyer, and considering the island's positive effect on increased sperm counts the possibility of Kate expecting is not out of the question.

Our Wild Prediction: Now off the island and with her criminal record expunged, Kate takes courses at the police academy in Fresno and then puts her skills to use as a detective in a special unit of the LAPD that handles high-profile crimes and murders.
