The Lorax broke multiple records out of the gate, becoming the biggest box office opening of 2012, and the third biggest March opening ever, Box Office Mojo reports.

The animated Dr. Seuss film, featuring the voices of Danny DeVito, Taylor Swift and Zac Efron, grossed an estimated $70.7 million in its debut. The weekend's other major new release, Project X, nabbed $20.7 million to take second place.

Act of Valor tops box office, Paul Rudd's Wanderlust bombs

Following in third place was last weekend's No. 1 film, Act of Valor, with $13.7 million. Safe House came in at No. 4, grabbing $7.2 million. Tyler Perry's Good Deeds completed the top 5 with $7 million.

At No. 6, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island uncovered $6.9 million. The Vow followed in seventh place, drawing $6.1 million.

Rounding out the top 10: This Means War (No. 8, $5.6 million), Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance (No. 9, $4.7 million) and last weekend's big Oscar winner, The Artist (No. 10, $3.9 million).
