Andy Cohen knows what the people want. Riverdale stars Lili Reinhart, KJ Apa, Luke Perry and Madchen Amick appeared on Watch What Happens Liveon Tuesday and Cohen couldn't pass up an opportunity to create nostalgia gold. As part of the talk show's "Clubhouse Playhouse" recurring segment, Cohen asked Apa to step into the role his onscreen father Perry played in 90210, that of bad boy Dylan McKay, and asked Reinhart to take on the part of Brenda Walsh, played by Shannen Doherty, to recreate one of the primetime soap's most memorable scenes.
The scene in question is from the Season 2 premiere, which aired in 1991, several years before Apa and Reinhart were even born. In it, Brenda has decided that after a recent pregnancy scare she needs to break things off with her boyfriend Dylan. Not to say that Riverdale will be winning Emmys anytime soon, but man oh man was this a different era of television and a different style of writing. Hearing Apa and Reinhart discuss condoms and birth control like they're in a PSA and not reciting lines from a long-running, beloved Fox drama is funny enough, but what really takes this over the top is getting to see Perry cringe and awkwardly smile at the recreation, even giving approving notes on Apa's delivery at one point.
If this got you feeling nostalgic, check out Beverly Hills, 90210 on Hulu. And you can catch Riverdale when it returns Wednesday at 8/7c on The CW.
