Leonardo DiCaprio Met Pope Francis

The Pope and the Revenant talked climate change in Vatican City

Liam Mathews

Leonardo DiCaprio ratcheted up his Oscar campaign yet another level on Thursday by meeting with His Holiness Pope Francis at the Vatican. The actor presented the pope with a book of Hieronymous Bosch paintings and a check from his environmental charitable foundation, and the pope gave the actor two books that he wrote, because Pope Francis rolls like that.

DiCaprio, his father George, and the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation's fundraising chair Milutin Gatsby met with Pope Francis for 15 minutes Thursday morning. DiCaprio greeted the pope by kissing his ring and saying "Your Holiness, thank you for granting me this private audience with you" in Italian.

He then presented Pope Francis with a book of paintings by 15th-century Dutch painter Hieronymous Bosch, explaining that a poster of "Garden of Earthly Delights" hung over his crib as a young child, and even then the painting symbolized to him the ways that humanity has destroyed the planet we've been given, which is a very Leo thing to say. He also presented a check from the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation for Pope Francis to use for a charity "close to your heart." In turn, Pope Francis presented DiCaprio with his papal statement on the ecological crisis, Laudato Si. In that book, Pope Francis presents climate change as one of the great moral dilemmas of modern times.

The Revenant tops Oscar nominations

Michael Fassbender will have to get Vladimir Putin to stop supporting the Assad regime in Syria if he wants to win the Oscar now.
