This is super news!

Nashville actress Laura Benanti has been cast in a recurring role on CBS' Supergirl, Deadline reports.

The Tony winner will play Alura Zor-El, the birth mother of Kara Zor-El (Glee's Melissa Benoist). She'll send her daughter to Earth to escape Krypton's destruction.

Everything you need to know about the Oscars

Based on the characters from the DC Comics and adapted for TV by Ali Adler and Arrow/The Flash executive producer Greg Berlanti, Supergirl will follow Kara's adventures following her arrival on Earth.

For years Kara avoided using the special powers she shared with her famous cousin (you know him by the name Clark Kent a.k.a. Superman), but at 24, she decides she's over being normal and wants to embrace her superhuman abilities to become the hero she was always meant to be.

Alura's wisdom will cross time and space and prove to be an invaluable resource for Kara as she works toward becoming that hero.

Now, the only question I have is this: When is the musical episode?
