Lady Gaga debuted her new single, "Till It Happens to You," on Friday along with a music video that acts as a powerful public service announcement about campus rape.

In the emotionally raw ballad, Gaga, who has spoken publicly about her own experiences as a rape survivor, sings about the emptiness of advice often given to survivors by outsiders, such as "pull it together," "hold your head up" and "get up and move on." "Till it happens to you, you don't know/ How it feels," Gaga sings in the chorus.

The song was composed by Diane Warren and is the theme for the The Hunting Ground, a documentary about sexual assault on college campuses. The accompanying music video was written and directed by Catherine Hardwicke, who reteamed with Twilight and Thirteen star Nikki Reed for the project.

A portion of the proceeds from the sale of "Till It Happens to You" will be donated to organizations helping survivors of sexual assault.
