People on the verge seems to be the theme of Showtime's upcoming series Kidding, a comedy-drama hybrid starring Jim Carrey as a soft-spoken and good-natured children's television show host who is about to lose his goddamned sh--. The newest trailer shows that the tempest inside of Carrey's character, the jovially named Mr. Pickles, is spreading to the rest of the characters, and that maybe underneath the surface of all our smiles -- yes, yours too -- are people who just can't deal.

With the visual component being provided by French director extraordinaire Michel Gondry (Carrey's director for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and the man behind Daft Punk's stunning videos for "Around the World" and "Da Funk"), Kidding appears to be an early frontrunner for best show that you didn't even know existed until a few weeks ago.

Kidding debuts Sunday, Sept. 9 at 10/9c on Showtime.
