How to Have the Perfect Kentucky Derby Day

Here's everything you need to know

Sadie Gennis

Derby Day is upon us! This means a day of excessive hats and excessive booze. And while not all of us are lucky enough to be at Churchill Downs for the anticipated annual event, here's how you can have the perfect Kentucky Derby weekend.

When to watch: The 142nd Kentucky Derby starts Saturday, May 7 at 6:34 p.m. ET. You can catch the preshow on NBC, with coverage starting at 4 p.m.

How to pregame: By marathoning BoJack Horsemanon Netflix, because nothing screams Kentucky Derby like a really depressed horse/former actor. For a real upper, you could also rent Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken on Amazon. Really, any horse-themed programming will do, but all the good ones are quite sad.

Who to follow on social media:Johnny Weir and Tara Lipinski. The figure skating stars have become NBC's go-to sports correspondents when the network needs to give its broadcasts a little more pep. And Weir's fashions alone are always a must-see.

What to eat: Horseshoe string fries, trail mix, Rice Krispies hay bales, and carrot cake.

What to drink: Mint juleps, duh. They're classic for a reason.

Who to bet on: Oscar Nominated. Nyquist might be the overwhelming favorite to win, but Oscar Nominated's name is so much cooler.

How will you be spending Derby Day?
