In 2010, Jackson filed a wrongful death lawsuit against AEG, the promoter behind Jackson's This Is It tour, for more than $40 billion. Jackson claimed that "AEG's actions and inactions led to Michael Jackson's death on June 25, 2009." The lawsuit also said that because AEG hired Dr. Conrad Murray, the company is responsible for his actions. AEG claimed that Jackson was personally behind Murray's hiring. Last month, a jury ruled that AEG was not liable and that although AEG did in fact hire Murray, the doctor was deemed competent to perform the work for which he was hired.

In 2011, Murray was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in Jackson's2009 death. He was released from prison last month after serving two years of a four-year sentence
