Katherine Heigl Katherine Heigl

Ed Bernero is stepping down as showrunner of Katherine Heigl's upcoming NBC drama State of Affairs, TVGuide.com confirmed.

A source tells Entertainment Weekly, which first reported the news, that Bernero's exit was due to creative differences with executive producer Joe Carnahan and not issues with Heigl, who's continuing her apology and excuses tour to shed the image that she's difficult to work with.

Fall TV's must-see new shows

On the drama, which is Heigl's first TV series since her contentious departure from Grey's Anatomy, she stars as Charleston Tucker, a CIA analyst who advises the president (Alfre Woodward) on international affairs. The twist: The president also happens to be the mother of her boyfriend, who died under suspicious circumstances.

State of Affairs premieres Monday, Nov. 17 at 10/9c on NBC.
