In an interview with The Wrap, Yost said: "We are still looking for something for Eric Stonestreet to play, because he's a Kansas boy, and he'd like to play a bad guy. So if we can come up with something that fits in with [the Modern Family] schedule, of course we will... he's just great."

Yost has been trying to get the actor on the show since the end of the first season, according to an earlier interview with Collider.com.

Last season, the Emmy-winning Stonestreet was able to balance Modern Family with a guest role on another FX series: He played a psychiatric patient of Ben's on Ryan Murphy's American Horror Story.
