Hours after filing for divorce, Jon and Kate Gosselin announced the decision on their show, Jon & Kate Plus 8, saying they had decided to "separate" and were trying to do what was best for their children.

Interviewing separately, both parents used the word "separate" — not divorce. But late in the episode, on-screen text said they had filed Monday for the "dissolution" of their marriage.

Kate said she wasn't "fond" of the idea and was most worried about her children. "How they'll be another statistic," she said. "How they'll be the kids looking back and saying, 'My parents split up when I was fill-in-the-blank age.' That's primarily it, but for myself I don't really want to be alone. I don't want to do this alone, but it's required and I've got to do it."

"It's life, it's a roller coaster. Sometimes it goes off the track," Jon added. "I don't hate Kate, but y'know. I just have to do what's best for me and my kids."

The episode also featured the children playing in newly constructed toy houses — and a fight over where they should be assembled. Jon used the incident to explain the separation. "It's not good for us to be arguing in front of our kids," he said, calling Monday's show the "hardest episode ever."

Still, the couple said the show would go on. Kate said she plans to stay in their Pennsylvania house with the kids, and Jon said he plans to visit and spend time with them separately. While Kate spoke of sobbing, Jon seemed eager to move on.

"I've done my best to keep our family together, to make my kids lives' happy," Kate said. [I] not only look at who they are now, but who they will become. [I] try to help form them to be the best that they can be."

Jon said that attitude can perhaps improve the Gosselins' relationship. "If we keep that going, maybe our relationship will become friendship," he said. "I just want my kids to be safe and healthy and have a true understanding of what we did for them and why we did it. And that Mommy and Daddy love them and that it will be OK."
