This will be his first series regular role
John Cusack just snagged his first series regular role for television, joining Gillian Flynn's new show Utopia at Amazon.
Utopia, which is adapted from U.K.'s Channel 4 series of the same name, is being headed by Flynn, who is serving as showrunner, executive producer, and creator. This marks her first time pulling triple duty, as she previously wrote episodes of Sharp Objects (based on her own story), along with the feature films Gone Girl (where she adapted her novel to the screen) and last years Widows.
According to Amazon, Utopia will follow a group of young adults who meet online and are "mercilessly hunted by a shadowy deep state organization after they come in to possession of a near mythical cult underground graphic novel -- they discover the conspiracy theories in the comic's pages may actually be real and are forced in to the dangerous, unique and ironic position of saving the world."
Cusack is set to play Dr. Kevin Christie, who is "charismatic and media-savvy, with a brilliant biotech mind and a philanthropic outlook. Christie altruistically wants to change the world through science."
The series also stars The Office's Rainn Wilson, Hellboy'sSasha Lane, Cougar Town's Dan Byrd, Gotham'sCory Michael Smith, and You're The Worst's Desmin Borges.
While Cusack has popped here and there on television, like one episode of Frasier back in 1996 and an episode of HBO's Doll & Em where he played himself, this marks his first turn as a regular.
There's no word on when Utopia will premiere, but with this casting news it sounds like it is getting ready to head into production soon.
