The anthology series will be a bit ~mysterious~

Jason Segel is getting back to the small screen scene.

He and AMC announced at Saturday's Television Critics Association tour (via TVLine) that the network will host the How I Met Your Mother star's newest creative endeavor: an anthology series titled Dispatches from Elsewhere.

The series is described as being centered on "a group of ordinary people who stumble onto a puzzle hiding just behind the veil of everyday life [who] come to find that the mystery winds far deeper than they ever imagined."

That logline is vague enough, of course, to cover anything from some massive mind-bender like Westworld to a simpler schtick stack like Arrested Development. With Segel's creative history in mind -- he wrote scripts for Forgetting Sarah Marshall, The Muppets, and Sex Tape -- one might imagine Dispatches from Elsewhere might land somewhere in between those polar concepts.

In a statement, Segel said he "truly could not imagine a better team and more perfect home for this material" than the network, which is also home to fan favorites like The Walking Dead and Better Call Saul. AMC echoed that enthusiasm, with programming president David Madden saying, "AMC has a proven history of finding shows that rise above, in every sense, and we think Dispatches from Elsewhere will be an incredible addition to that club. This is a very special project based on a truly unique premise and peopled by vivid characters, all driven by Jason's wildly creative vision. We're thrilled for audiences to see this bold, witty and enthralling series."

Filming on the series, which will feature Segel on the cast list as well, is expected to begin in 2019. Segel will share executive producing duties with Scott Rudin, Eli Bush and Garrett Basch.

Dispatches from Elsewhere will mark something of a delayed return for Segel to the television circuit. He starred in HIMYM for nine seasons but has since focused on his film work, with projects like Netflix's Come Sunday and his starring role in James Ponsoldt's David Foster Wallace biopic, The End of the Tour.
