If your heart is breaking because Jane the Virgin is coming to an end this year, The CW might just be able to preserve the magic for you with its list of pilot pickups. Both Jane the Virgin and Riverdale have spin-offs in the works this pilot season!
The Jane the Virgin spin-off is described as a telenovela anthology, with each season following a different fictional novel "written by" Jane Villanueva (Gina Rodriguez). The first season takes place at a Napa Valley Vineyard where the only thing that stays buried less than family secrets are family members. Rodriguez announced the news on Twitter, saying, "We got good news from the CW! Jane will be birthing a SPIN OFF!!!!! Jane The Novelas!!!"
Riverdale's newest spin-off, Katy Keene, is another Archie Comics property from Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. It follows fashion-legend-to-be Katy Keene and her gaggle of 20-something friends as they try to make it in New York City. It's described as a musical dramedy centering on aspiring artists chasing their dreams on Broadway, the runway and in the recording studio. Kind of feels like Gossip Girlmeets Fame?
Additionally, The CW handed out pilot orders to two other projects that have long been in development: a Nancy Drew drama and reimagining of The Lost Boys.
It's worth noting that of the four pilots ordered, none of them can boast themselves to be original works since they all rely on previous source material or a pre-existing parent series. We may one day reach a point where The CW network consists entirely of reimagined properties.
