Heroes' rebirth was short-lived.

Heroes Reborn will not return for a second season, NBC Entertainment President Bob Greenblatt told reporters at the Television Critics Association winter previews Wednesday, according to Variety.

The news is not entirely unexpected. Heroes: Reborn was always pitched as an event series, and the show's ratings, which declined steadily after the series premiere, never indicated that fans were clamoring for more.

According to Variety, Greenblatt did not rule out the possibility of more Heroes, on the off-chance that creator Tim Kring "woke up one day and said, 'Oh, I have another chapter to tell.'"

NBC will broadcast the remainder of the show's episodes over the next two weeks.
