HBO has given a series order to The Brink, a comedy starring Tim Robbins and Jack Black, TVGuide.com has confirmed.

The dark comedy focuses on a  geopolitical crisis and its effect on three disparate and desperate men — U.S. Secretary of State Walter Hollander (Robbins), lowly Foreign Service officer Alex Coppins (Black), and ace Navy fighter pilot Zeke Callahan (Orange Is the New Black's Pablo Schreiber). These three compromised souls must pull through the chaos around them to save the planet from World War III.

Olympics: What to watch

Maribeth Monroe, Aasif Mandvi (The Daily Show), Geoff Pierson (Dexter) and Esai Morales (Criminal Minds) will also star in the comedy from executive producers Roberto Benabib (Weeds), Jerry Weintraub (Behind the Candelabra) and Jay Roach. Roach, known for helming HBO's Recount and Game Change, also directed the pilot.

Deadline.com first reported the news of the series order. The Brink marks the first series regular roles for both Robbins and Black, who shared the screen in 1992's Bob Roberts and 1995's Dead Man Walking. Robbins guest-starred on St. Elsewhere, and Black has appeared on Community, The Office and HBO's Mr. Show.

Shows we're losing this season

The series order comes two weeks after HBO canceled two of its first-year comedies, Hello Ladies and Family Tree.
