After premiering in its new Friday timeslot to dismal numbers last week, cable network USA has expressed interest in picking up the series if it is not renewed by ABC, Deadline reports.

Fall TV 2013 Scorecard: Which shows are returning? Which aren't?

Sony TV, the studio that produces the cult comedy, has quietly started reaching out to other networks, including USA and its parent network NBC, about picking up a fourth season of the show.

Sony's efforts come after ABC has moved Happy Endings to three different nights in one season. Season 3 premiered in October on Tuesdays at 9/8c before being moved to Sundays at 10/9c, where it aired on both nights for several weeks. Happy Endings then went off the air for two months, before ABC began airing back-to-back new episodes on Fridays at 8/7c. ABC even recently launched a "Save Happy Endings" ad campaign to promote the show's Friday timeslot.

18 reasons to watch Happy Endings

Although USA's original series slate is currently crowded by only hour-long series, the cable network began ordering half-hour comedy pilots last year in hopes of finding a new show to pair with Modern Family reruns, which begin airing on USA this fall.

If Happy Endings moves to USA, it would follow the path of recent series like Southland and Cougar Town, which were canceled by their original networks and then moved to cable. Southland has spent four of its five seasons on TNT, and Cougar Town was recently renewed for a fifth season — its second on TBS.
