Because of its early Thursday release, The Hangover Part II ranks behind the latest Pirates as the second-biggest opening of 2011 and the second-biggest opening for an R-rated movie ever following The Matrix Reloaded.
Adding in Kung Fu Panda 2's $48 million take, this was the largest Memorial Day weekend box office ever, beating out 2007's triple threat of Pirates 3, Shrek 3 and Spider-man 3. Kung Fu Panda 2's draw rose to $53.8 million over its first four days of release.
Last weekend's top film, Pirates of the Caribbean 4: On Stranger Tides, fell 56 percent in Week Two to attract $39.3 million at No. 3; its total take after two weekends: $152.9 million. Coming in fourth place was Bridesmaids with $16.4 million. Thor completed the top 5, drawing $9.4 million — adding up to $159.7 million after four weeks.
Fast Five parked at No. 6, garnering $6.6 million and bringing its five-weekend total to $196 million. In a distant seventh place, Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris jumped into the top 10 with $1.91 million.
