The action movie, starring Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively, grossed an estimated $52.7 million in its first weekend of release. The figure was higher than The Green Hornet's $33.5 million take in January, but lower than the opening numbers for fellow summer releases Thor ($65.7 million) and X-Men: First Class ($55.1 million).
Super 8 grabs top spot at box office
Super 8 earned $21.3 million in its second week to take the No. 2 spot.
The week's other new release, Mr. Popper's Penguins, debuted third with $18.2 million.
X-Men: First Class ranked fourth ($11.5 million), followed by The Hangover Part II at No. 5 ($9.6 million). In its fourth week, The Hangover Part II is now the highest-grossing R-rated comedy of all time, topping its predecessor. Its take so far: $232.7 million.
At No. 6, Kung Fu Panda 2drew $8.7 million, bringing its total to $143.3 million. Bridesmaidswas seventh for the weekend, attracting $7.5 million, which brings its total to $136.8 million.
Rounding out the top 10: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides(No. 8, $6.2 million, and $220.3 million after five weekends), Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris (No. 9, $5.2 million) and Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer (No. 10, $2.2 million).
