The Good Wife: Is It Time for Alicia and Peter to Try Again?

Two years ago, The Good Wife's Alicia Florrick (Julianna Margulies) was faced with whether or not to answer a phone call. A year ago, she had to choose whether or not to enter a $7800-a-night presidential suite with her boss. But on Sunday's Season 3 finale, Alicia had a lot more to gain — and possibly lose — with her latest choice: her family.
On Sunday's episode, the good (estranged) wife seemed to flirt with the possibility of forgiving the bad husband. After weeks of mending things with Peter (Chris Noth) — telling him to run for governor, joining forces with him against Jackie regarding the house — Alicia came very close to giving things another shot with her ex. Yes, they've had sex and slept in the same bed since he admitted to sucking the toes of a prostitute, but a real reconciliation never seemed within reach. Until now.

The episode featured several significant steps forward for the couple. Most importantly, Peter admitted to Patti Nyholm and Louis Canning (guest stars Martha Plimpton and Michael J. Fox) that he was separated from his wife to protect her professional integrity despite the severe impact it could have on his campaign. In one of the best moments of the episode, Peter was also able to be in the same elevator with Alicia's ex-lovah, Will (Josh Charles), without killing him — a major change from the threats Peter hurled earlier this season. The latter exchange also provided a nice moment for Alicia and Will to finally close the chapter on their affair when she said she didn't think it was a mistake.The first three seasons have proven that Alicia can do it all on her own after years of being a doting, stay-at-home wife. She can be a single mother. She can be a great lawyer. She can date. And she can juggle all of those things pretty darn well (as long as neither child feels the need to suddenly get baptized after school without telling anyone). But the question as The Good Wife heads into Season 4 is: Can she do both? Can she be a great lawyer and have the great home life? She and Peter teetered on the edge of a full-fledged reunion at the beginning of the second season, but never truly went back to being a single unit the way it seems they were for so many years before his scandal.
